Lamina

SITE–SPECIFIC PROJECTION

“Monumental nature, in between l'anima and the animal."

Set in the territory between light and matter, “Lamina” delves into the invisible stratum that surrounds all things. This site-specific tale premiered in 2020 at Aveiro’s “Prisma / Art Light Tech Festival” and features several chapters unfolding within the emotional domain. Immersed in a stream of digital scenes and cosmic sounds, guided by the abstraction of light, the audience discovers unknown inner landscapes revealed by the gleam of introspection.

Far into the future, the evolving frontier for humanity relies extensively on the dialogue between societies. To see the fragments that make up the whole, hidden amongst the pixels, requires the capacity to recognize patterns and forge deep connections with others. The essence of “Lamina” is encapsulated by the experience, functioning as an “empathy box” that transforms individual challenges into shared emotions. Humanity is perceived as a unified entity, resonating in harmony with the natural world it inhabits.

The artwork prompts a reflection that goes beyond valence labels and captures the richness and complexity of human emotions. Instead of attempting to grasp the intangible, “Lamina” allows its energetic charge to propagate and flow endlessly. The narrative stays open to multiple interpretations, tapping into our comprehension of human emotions and how they propel action, instigate homeostatic change, and shape life.

THE URBAN SPACE

The façade of the União das Freguesias de Glória e Vera Cruz building provides an ideal aspect ratio to experience the vastness of “Lamina”‘s abstract macrocosm. Designed as a large-scale projection, the monumental presence of the artwork allows its motion to be prominent yet seamlessly integrated into Aveiro’s urban landscape.

“Lamina” also dazzled at the “Alys Beach Digital Graffiti” festival, standing out among an array of luminous artworks scattered throughout the pristine cityscape of the coastal town. The elegant ambiance of Alys Beach, with its immaculate white walls, added an extra layer of charm to the projection, infusing the piece with a sleek and vibrant glow.

By involving the audience on multiple levels, “Lamina” incorporates physical and intellectual elements in the interactions between the viewer and public space. This intimate, multi-layered experience has the potential to evoke diverse emotional responses and initiate reflections on the role of art in urban spaces. Within the urban landscape, “Lamina” serves as the subtle glaze that enriches the cultural tapestry of the community.
